Small Space Scribes on January 24, 2020 0 Comments Just because you live in a small apartment, tiny house, or RV, doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. However, you do have to be realistic and strategic about how you use your small space. Whether it’s a family game night or a dinner party, it’s possible to still have a good time and entertain in your small space while keeping it functional. Dual-Purpose Furniture One of the most important things you can do is purchase furniture that has dual uses. For example, a coffee table or ottoman with a hidden storage compartment is the perfect place to stuff pillows, blankets, toys, books, and magazines while still being a comfortable place to sit for your next book club meeting or movie-viewing party. A wall cabinet or armoire can hold anything from linens, to books and games, to cleaning supplies. Even better if it comes with a fold-out desk to be used when you need to pay bills or do homework, instead of a place to accumulate clutter out in the open. Hang Vertical Shelving for Books and Crafts If you’re an avid reader or crafter, hanging vertical shelves to use for books or craft supplies will help maximize your area instead of taking up more floor space. You can find wall shelving in a variety of unique styles so it will also act as wall decor and add to the visual aesthetics of your home. Build a Puzzle/Game Table Playing games and working on puzzles is a great way to pass the time with friends and family, but it can take up a lot of space for extended periods of time — especially if you’re doing a 1,000-piece puzzle or playing Monopoly! If you like to build things, there are many options for DIY Puzzle and Game Tables with built-in storage that allow you to have your space back when you need a break. There are also versions available for purchase too. Get Outdoors Whenever Possible If you start to feel cramped in your tiny home or RV, all you have to do is step outside, no matter what time of year it is. Fire up the grill and invite guests over for a barbecue in the summer and turn on an outdoor heater when the evenings start to get cooler. The ambiance of a fire pit always welcomes good humor and conversation — complete with roasting marshmallows and smores! Simplify Your Party If you prefer to host a party indoors, keep it reasonable and realistic. For example, a children’s birthday party might not make sense if you don’t have the space for kids to run around, but a Super Bowl party might be fun since people are generally sitting in one place, eating appetizers, and watching the TV screen. Whatever your entertaining might entail, do as much prep ahead of time, like emptying the dishwasher so dishes don’t stack up, having a place for guests to put their belongings when they arrive, and saving table space by displaying food on stackable trays and keeping beverages in a beverage cooler for guests to grab at their convenience. Keep the Space Cool If you’re entertaining a group of people in your tiny home, remember that more body heat will cause small spaces to get hot and stuffy quickly. Keep the place cool by opening doors and windows or using a portable air conditioner. Conquer the Clutter A big fun-stealer from small space living can be clutter! To conquer any clutter around you, invest in good storage solutions that make sense for your space, try organization hacks, minimize decor, and try downsizing your life even more than you already have. By being strategic with your furniture, smart with your storage, and simplifying your small space, you’ll be able to keep the fun in functional living in your apartment, RV or tiny home.
