2 Major Reasons Why the Capresso Coffee à la Carte Rivals the Keurig

By now we’ve all heard of, seen and probably used a one-cup coffee maker. The most popular of these, of course, is the Keurig. Keurigs are a fantastic invention, because there are many scenarios when an entire pot of coffee is unnecessary. For example, if you prefer a different type of coffee than your other housemates, it doesn’t make any sense to brew a whole pot of coffee only you’re going to drink.

The same thing goes for office settings. If you’ve got anywhere from 5 to 500 co-workers, there is a very slim chance you all agree on coffee. Then comes the cleaning up conundrum: Who cleans the carafe? Should it be the person who made the coffee or the last person to have a mug? Even then, not all carafes are dishwasher safe and hand-washing anything in this day and age seems silly. With a one-cup coffee maker, everyone uses and then cleans their own mug. No confusion there.

For these reasons and more, the Keurig is a great product that is ideal for a number of coffee dispensing situations. Really, the only shortcoming of the Keurig is it is not ideal for ALL coffee dispensing situations. The Capresso Coffee à la Carte 3-in-1 brewing system, however, is and here’s why:

4 Different Types of Freezers and Their Best Uses

The freezer is a relatively modern invention, only becoming widespread after World War II. Today it can be difficult to imagine the home without at least one freezer, though. They have become one of the most common ways for people to preserve meat and other foods. Freezing foods protects them from bacteria, mold, and rot. Many people prefer to shop less frequently and buy large quantities in order to save money and time. A standalone freezer can be a thrifty alternative to purchasing a refrigerator that has a larger freezer section.

Freezers come in many sizes, but they can be separated into these four basic styles that have very distinct purposes.

Chest Freezers

Chest Freezer

The most economical freezer is the chest freezer. It is called this because it is typically shaped like a large box or chest with a hinged lid that opens upward. Because of the lid, a chest freezer requires adequate space with plenty of head room.

Chest freezers range in size from compact models as small as 2.1 cubic feet to commercial sizes with more than 40 cubic feet of space. The most common place to find a chest freezer is the garage, utility room, or basement of a house, since it tends to be such a large appliance. The large, boxy dimensions of the chest freezer are ideal for storing bulky items that do not typically fit well into the freezer section of a refrigerator. This economical use of space frees up the refrigerator freezer for convenience foods.

Pressure Cooker vs. Slow Cooker: Which One Is Right for You?

Pressure cookers and slow cookers seem similar, but they are actually very different methods of cooking food. A pressure cooker uses hot steam and pressure to quickly cook food, such as dried beans, faster than conventional cooking methods. Slow cookers use lower temperatures and longer cooking times to slowly cook food, such as meat and stews.

Both the pressure cooker and the slow cooker have their advantages in the kitchen, and there are even some appliances that combine both pressure cooking and slow cooking in the same machine like the Nesco 3-in-1 Digital Pressure Cooker.

Pressure Cooker Fagor

Pressure Cookers

Pressure cookers are commonly associated with dramatically reducing rice cooking times but it is easy to make a multitude of dishes like dulce de leche by pressure cooking condensed milk, roasting garlic, and even homemade bread! The science behind a pressure cooker is simple. Less liquid is used for steaming or boiling combined with a shorter cook time than when using an ordinary saucepan keeping your meal vitamin and mineral rich. Like most anything in the kitchen, get creative and before you know it your new favorite recipe might be pressure cooked rosemary risotto or red wine braised beef shank.

A countertop dishwasher is a portable unit that is meant to be kept on the counter for everyday use. They pack just as much cleaning power as their full-size counterparts, yet use far less water and detergent. Some may ask why people would even think about using a portable unit when full-sized dishwashers are standard in many kitchens today.

Here are eight common scenarios where you would benefit from using a portable or countertop dishwasher.

1. College Apartment/Dorm Room

College apartments and/or dorm rooms are known for many things, from all night study sessions to movie marathons. The last thing that most students worry about is washing dishes and cleaning. Add this to the fact that most dorm rooms are not equipped with appliances, especially a full-size dishwasher, and the benefits of these portable cleaners become instantly appealing.

What is a Halogen Oven?

Morningware Infrared Halogen Oven

I think everyone who knows me, knows that I am not a cook. I don’t enjoy cooking and I’ll be the first to admit that I’m terrible at it.

When I saw this halogen oven from Morningware at the Housewares Show a few years ago, I was intrigued mostly because I had never seen anything that looked like it before. When we stopped at the booth to learn about this product, I knew it was something we had to add to our website. I also knew it was something I had to have for myself.

The convenience of this oven is amazing! It cooks 50% faster than traditional ovens and can heat up to 400 degrees without pre-heating. It uses convection, conduction, halogen and infrared technology to cook. You don’t even have to defrost your meat, you can put it in frozen and it will cook in about 30 minutes!

The Morningware oven also comes with a cooking chart so you’ll never have to guess how long your different meats and vegetables need to be in the oven. It’s so fast and easy that even I can cook using this!

Immersion Blender Recipe: Garlic Mashed Fauxtatoes

Immersion Blenders

Immersion blenders are a product that I have recently fallen in love with. They just take the hassle out of blending. In a previous life, I would often burn myself while I was trying to transfer whatever hot mixture I was cooking up into the blender while making soups. And it never failed that I would splatter ingredients all over my kitchen and my shirt while I was trying to use a hand mixer to whip up some mashed potatoes. Then, one glorious day, I came across an immersion blender (also known as a stick mixer) and I have not looked back since.

Now, when I am cooking soups or whipping up mashed potatoes, I just get out my immersion blender and stick it right in the pot that I have been cooking the ingredients in, flip the switch and that’s it. It makes for less mess which means less clean up and less time.

The latest thing I have been whipping up with my immersion blender is No Potato Garlic Mashed “Fauxtatoes.”

No Potato Garlic Mashed “Fauxtatoes”

Ingredients

1 Head of cauliflower
2-3 Tablespoons of sour cream
3-4 Laughing cow cheese wedges
3-4 Garlic cloves, minced
2 Teaspoons coarse ground pepper
Salt to taste

Directions

1. Steam the cauliflower and drain water from the pan.
2. Add all other ingredients to pan with cauliflower.
3. Take an immersion blender and blend until desired consistency. (I enjoy my “fauxtatoes” smooth, so I blend until there are no chunks left.)
4. Enjoy!
